Kevin Miller, the goalkeeper who spent three seasons at Barnsley around the turn of the millennium, died unexpectedly overnight on Tuesday. He was 57.
Miller had been working as goalkeeping coach at Wigan Athletic, a role he had taken up over the summer to link up once more with former Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell. His sudden passing has left everyone at the club, and across the wider football community, deeply saddened.
A career built on consistency
Few goalkeepers of his era accumulated as many appearances. Miller finished his professional career with 738 games to his name, a figure that speaks to his durability and the trust managers placed in him throughout a two-decade career.
He came through the Cornish non-league scene, representing Newquay and Falmouth Town before joining Exeter City in 1989. He played more than 200 games for Exeter over his first spell there, helping the club to a fourth-tier title, and went on to represent Birmingham City, Watford, Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Bristol Rovers, Southampton and Torquay United.
At Watford he twice won the player of the season award. Crystal Palace then paid £1.5m to bring him to the Premier League in 1997. He played all 38 league matches as Palace were relegated in 1998, and remained first choice the following season in Division One.
His time at Barnsley
Miller left Crystal Palace in the summer of 1999 to begin a three-year stint at Barnsley. The Reds, who are now competing in League One, gave him a settled home after the upheaval of relegation. He was a dependable presence between the posts and brought with him the experience of top-flight football at a time when the club was rebuilding.
He returned to Exeter City in 2002 for one further season, before later stints at Bristol Rovers, Southampton and Torquay United rounded off a playing career of remarkable longevity.
Tributes pour in
Wigan Athletic were the first to pay tribute, saying Miller had "quickly become a much-loved and respected member" of their first-team staff despite his time with the club being brief.
"His experience, professionalism and passion for goalkeeping were clear for all to see," the club said in a statement. "Kevin's contribution to football was significant, but for those who worked alongside him, it was the person he was that will be remembered most."
Exeter City, the club where Miller made 252 appearances across two spells and later worked as goalkeeping coach, described him as having earned "a place in the hearts of supporters with his performances between the posts and his wholehearted commitment to the club".
"At just 57, his passing is a huge loss to his family, friends and everyone who knew him," Exeter added. "His time in Devon left a lasting impression on those around the club, and his contribution remains a big part of Exeter City's story."
Wigan confirmed that Miller is survived by his wife Fiona and daughter Esme. The thoughts of everyone connected with Barnsley FC and the wider League One family are with his loved ones.
