Paddy Kelly has credited his regular football at Barnsley with helping him establish himself in the Northern Ireland senior squad, and the 21-year-old midfielder is now targeting a meaningful contribution during the Nations League campaign that gets under way this week.
From Oakwell to the international stage
Kelly joined the Tykes after three years at West Ham United, a spell that included a loan season at fellow League One club Doncaster Rovers. That experience in the third tier proved formative, and his move to Barnsley has accelerated his development considerably. He has started every League One fixture so far this season and has been handed the vice-captaincy by manager Conor Hourihane, a notable responsibility for a player who will turn 22 during the current international window.
"I had a good year at club level, got my first senior international start and first goal, so it was a good year for me," Kelly told BBC Sport NI. "It was a proud moment for me as it's something I've been working on throughout the youth system at Club NI."
His performances for Barnsley caught the attention of Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill, who handed Kelly his debut in last November's 1-0 win over Luxembourg. A first senior international goal followed in June, coming in a 3-1 friendly defeat against France in Lille.
Youth and competition at Barnsley
Kelly drew a direct parallel between life at Barnsley and life in the Northern Ireland camp, noting that both environments are built around young players being trusted with genuine responsibility.
"We've quite a young team at Barnsley so it's quite similar to here where I'm an experienced player even though I'm young," he said. "It's been massive for me [playing regularly] and same last season as it probably led to me getting called up here."
He also pointed to the relentless nature of the third-tier schedule as useful preparation for the demands of international football. "It's tough in the EFL, quite robust with so many games and a lot of Saturday-Tuesday fixtures, especially around the Christmas period, so it's good to get playing that many games," he added.
A busy Nations League schedule
Northern Ireland's campaign opens on Friday when they travel to face Georgia (17:00 BST), before returning to Windsor Park to host Hungary on Monday, 28 September. The squad then head to Trnava, Slovakia to face Ukraine on Friday, 2 October, with the reverse fixture against Georgia rounding off the window on Monday, 5 October.
Kelly is confident the squad's youthful profile, with an average age of 24 according to the report, will cope with the condensed schedule. "I think a lot of the lads will be used to it anyway because at the clubs you have periods where you play a game every three days, so I don't think it will be anything major," he said. "We have such quality in the squad and I love coming away and playing here, so hopefully we can put in the performances out on the pitch."
Staying in is the hardest part
Despite a promising start to his international career, Kelly struck a measured tone when reflecting on what lies ahead. He acknowledged that earning a first cap is only the beginning, and that maintaining his place in O'Neill's plans will require continued consistency at club level.
"The easy part is getting in, but the hardest part is staying in and doing well," he said. "There's good competition for places and that's only good for us going forward."
For Barnsley supporters, Kelly's international recognition serves as a wider marker of the club's direction under Hourihane. The Tykes have made a point of trusting youth this season, and Kelly's progress, from a loan spell at Doncaster to vice-captain and established international, represents precisely the kind of trajectory the club's current model is designed to produce.
