Burton Albion have capped a busy window with a triple swoop for attacking reinforcements, bringing in winger Caylan Vickers on a permanent deal and completing loan agreements for Mark O'Mahony and Raphael Borges Rodrigues ahead of the new third-tier campaign.
Vickers arrives permanently from Brighton
Vickers, 21, has joined the Brewers from Brighton for an undisclosed fee, signing a two-year contract at the Pirelli Stadium with an option for a further 12 months. The winger began his career at Reading before moving to Brighton, where he did not make a senior appearance for the Seagulls. However, he gained substantial League One experience through loan spells at Barnsley and Wigan Athletic last season, netting twice for the former and once for the latter.
Head coach Gary Bowyer was clearly enthused by the addition. "He's an attacking player who will excite our supporters whilst adding goals and assists to the team," Bowyer said. "Having played at this level already, he arrives ready to contribute and we look forward to seeing how he continues to develop with us."
The structure of the deal, with a third-year option included, suggests Burton see Vickers as a player with genuine room to grow, rather than a short-term fix.
O'Mahony joins on a season-long loan
Alongside Vickers comes Mark O'Mahony, also 21, on loan from Brighton for the full season. The Republic of Ireland youth international made the move from Cork City to Brighton in 2023 and has collected four first-team appearances for the south coast club. A loan spell at Portsmouth in 2024 yielded three goals in 13 appearances at Fratton Park, before injury cut short a subsequent loan at Reading during the first half of last season.
"We're really pleased to have Mark with us for the season," Bowyer said. "It's great to add another attacking option to our squad; we look forward to working with him and continuing his development."
O'Mahony's goalscoring record at Portsmouth will give Burton supporters reason for optimism, provided he can stay fit over the coming months.
Raphael adds width from Coventry
The third new face is Raphael Borges Rodrigues, 22, who arrives at the Pirelli on a season-long loan from Coventry City. The winger adds further width and competition to Bowyer's attacking ranks, offering another option on either flank.
The trio represent a clear statement of intent from the Brewers, who appear determined to press forward and give Bowyer the tools to mount an ambitious League One campaign.
Kalinauskas departs by mutual consent
The club also confirmed that midfielder Tomas Kalinauskas has left the Pirelli Stadium following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. The 26-year-old Lithuanian was in the final year of a three-year deal signed after joining from FC Den Bosch in 2024. Kalinauskas made 44 appearances for Burton but also had loan spells at Kalmar FF in Sweden and Roda JC Kerkrade in the Netherlands during his time with the club.
His departure frees up squad space and wage budget that appears to have been reinvested directly into the three arrivals confirmed on the same day.
What it means for Burton
For a League One side, the ability to attract three attacking players in a single window window, including one permanent signing with structural contract detail such as a third-year option, points to a level of planning and recruitment nous that Brewers supporters will welcome. With Vickers and O'Mahony both carrying third-tier pedigree already, Bowyer now has depth and competition across his forward line ahead of what promises to be a demanding season in the division.
