Huddersfield Town have signed forward Samson Tovide on a three-year deal after the striker left Colchester United following the conclusion of last season.

A product of the Colchester academy

Tovide came through Colchester's youth setup and went on to make 151 appearances in all competitions for the Essex club, scoring 21 goals in that time. Last season he contributed five goals from 47 outings as contract talks between the two parties failed to produce an agreement, leaving him free to move on this summer.

Huddersfield acted quickly to secure his signature, with the Terriers beating off competition from other interested clubs to bring the forward to the John Smith's Stadium.

Tovide keen to take the next step

The forward spoke about the move on the club's official website, making clear his belief that League One with Huddersfield represents the right environment for him to grow.

"This has been an important summer for me, and I've had a choice to make in which team I thought would be right to take the next step with in my career and develop my game," Tovide said.

"In every conversation with the club, it gave me huge confidence about coming to Huddersfield Town, and I feel very blessed and honoured to sign for such a big club."

The three-year length of the contract signals that Huddersfield view Tovide as a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix, which is significant for a club operating in the third tier with wider ambitions.

What does it mean for the Terriers?

Huddersfield's recruitment activity this summer has already attracted attention, with head of recruitment hinting at further late business before the window closed. Tovide's arrival adds another attacking option to a squad that has shown it can grind out results, including a recent comeback win over Cambridge.

At 21 goals across his Colchester career, Tovide brings a track record in the Football League despite his relative youth. Having been developed from academy level, he arrives with a strong understanding of the physical and technical demands of lower-league football in England, something that can take imports or young players stepping up from non-league time to adapt to.

For a Huddersfield side navigating life in League One, adding a forward who already knows the level and has scope to improve is exactly the type of business that can make a difference over the course of a long season. The Terriers face a busy schedule ahead and depth in attacking areas will be tested.

Whether Tovide goes straight into the starting eleven or builds his way into the side from the bench, his signing gives the manager another credible option up front as the campaign progresses.
