Plymouth Argyle have allowed two of their most promising young players to leave on loan, with forward Tegan Finn and midfielder Caleb Roberts both joining Torquay United for spells of competitive football.
The terms of the deals
Finn, 18, has moved to Plainmoor on a one-month loan, while Roberts, 20, has signed until January. The pair are understood to have joined with the full backing of the League One club's football department, which is keen for both players to accumulate regular minutes at a good standard.
Torquay compete in National League South, and Argyle's director of football Derek Adams made clear that the level is well suited to the pair's development. "Both players have great potential and, as we know, they need to be playing more competitive football to aid their development," Adams told the club website. "As we saw in pre-season, Torquay are a well-coached team, and ought to be contending at the top end of National League South, so it will be good for both players to get regular minutes at a good level."
Who are Finn and Roberts?
Finn made his Argyle debut as a 16-year-old in November 2024, coming on against Leeds United, and has since gone on to make 24 appearances for the club, contributing three goals. His rapid progression through the academy into first-team consideration marks him out as one of the more exciting attacking prospects at Home Park.
Roberts, also a 16-year-old at the time of his own debut, has racked up 30 appearances in Argyle colours. He spent a six-game loan spell in the National League with Truro City last season, and this latest move represents a step up in the level of competition he will face during his temporary absence from the third tier.
A pattern of loan activity from Argyle
The two loans are consistent with Plymouth's broader approach to their younger players, using short-term moves to sharpen prospects who are not yet commanding regular starts at League One level. Finn and Roberts follow Torquay arrivals Jacob Beaumont-Clark, Angelo Cappello and Oludare Olufunwa, who moved to the Gulls earlier in the window, suggesting an established relationship between the two clubs.
For Plymouth, keeping young players active is particularly important in a division that demands physicality and consistency. A forward with three goals and 24 senior appearances by the age of 18, and a midfielder with 30 outings already in the bank, both represent serious investments in the club's future. The short loan lengths also give Argyle flexibility: should injuries or form require it, both players could be recalled and available sooner rather than later.
Adams's reference to Torquay's pre-season performances suggests the club has already assessed the environment the pair will be entering, which adds a degree of confidence to the arrangement. Whether Finn and Roberts return in the January window or push for a place in the Argyle squad thereafter will depend on how their respective loan spells unfold.
