AFC Wimbledon have bolstered their defensive options by signing 34-year-old Andy Yiadom on a short-term deal understood to run until January 2027, the club confirmed.
A wealth of third-tier experience
Yiadom arrives at Plough Lane with close to 400 EFL appearances to his name, all accumulated across the three professional divisions of the English pyramid. His League One pedigree in particular will be familiar to supporters of several clubs in the division.
The Ghana international began his career at Barnet, where he made 177 appearances and worked under the colourful stewardship of Edgar Davids. A free transfer to Barnsley followed in 2016, and Yiadom went on to captain the Tykes during the 2017/18 campaign. He then joined Reading in May 2018, going on to make 253 appearances for the Berkshire club over eight years and winning their player of the season award for 2021/22.
Both Barnsley and Reading are, of course, competing in League One this season, meaning Yiadom carries direct, recent experience of the level at which Wimbledon are operating.
Jackson pleased with training-ground impact
Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson indicated that the signing had not come out of nowhere. "Andy has been training with us for a number of weeks and has really impressed," Jackson said, according to the club website. "He has vast experience of the level, brings character and leadership and much needed cover in defensive positions."
The phrase "much needed cover" is significant. Jackson has publicly identified defensive depth as a priority, and Yiadom's availability on what is understood to be a short-term arrangement gives the club flexibility heading into the winter window in January.
Yiadom keen to contribute immediately
The defender himself struck an eager tone on joining. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to play for Wimbledon and I'm ready to give my all for the team," Yiadom told the club website. "I'm really excited to get involved in the games that we have coming up."
At 34, Yiadom is unlikely to command the same high-intensity minutes he accumulated during his peak years at Reading, but his reading of the game, positional discipline and experience of leadership at third-tier level could prove valuable to a Wimbledon squad still establishing itself in League One.
What this means for Wimbledon
The deal reflects a pragmatic approach from the Dons. Rather than committing to a longer contract for a player in the latter stages of his career, the club have structured the arrangement to last only until mid-season, at which point both parties can reassess. Should Yiadom perform consistently, a further extension would not be a surprise; should cover elsewhere arrive in January, the club retain full flexibility.
With the League One campaign already under way, Yiadom could be available for selection imminently, having already trained with the group. For a club aiming to consolidate in the third tier, the addition of a player who has captained sides at this level represents a low-risk, potentially high-reward piece of business.
